Velma Wortman was a third generation educator, a high school teacher of English and Speech, and a school librarian.  She sponsored the Sunshine Society and the yearbook and directed plays when in the classroom.
As a member of Alpha Tau Chapter, Velma served in many capacities before becoming chapter  president. At the state level she served as program chairman, second vice-president, and was elected state president in 1973.  During Velma’s biennium, Sweden began plans to become a European state organization; state mini-grants became a reality; and the Mary Beeman Scholarship was established for Indiana members.  The following year she became editor of The Hoosier Newsetteand continued for twenty years.
Velma was part of the planning committee for the 1977 Northeast Regional Conference held in Indianapolis, served on the International Nominations Committee, and chaired the 1984-1986 International Communications Committee.
Mrs. Wortman contributed greatly to her community as church organist, past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, past president of Indiana School Women’s Club, and supported various other local organizations with her time and talents.  She was an avid reader and a professional book reviewer. She enjoyed playing bridge and traveling.  A lady of enormous energy, she was honored for her outstanding role in the Society and, in turn, she greatly honored her membership in the Society.
