Edna McGuire Boyd, author and educator, exemplified key women teachers of the world. In 1938 she was initiated into the Society as a charter member. One year later she helped establish Epsilon Chapter at Greencastle.
Mrs. Boyd was elected the 1942-1944 Alpha Epsilon State president, having already proven herself as state program chair and state recording secretary. She became known for her endeavors as a member of the National Committee on Nominations, the National Planning Committee, and as member-at-large on the National Administrative Board.
Edna McGuire Boyd was elected National President of the Society, 1954-1956. During her biennium the groundbreaking, laying of the cornerstone, and dedication of a debt-free national headquarters were accomplished. She was recipient of the 1954 Achievement Award.
In 1962 she was charged with exploring the nature and organization of a foundation known today as the Educational Foundation. An international scholarship bearing her name was established a few years later. For years Society members benefited from Mrs. Boyd’s swift analysis and clear expression of convention floor issues.
Mrs. Boyd credited her father, a Civil War veteran, with inspiring her lifelong interest in American history. Her personal classroom experiences challenged her to become a stimulating author of social studies textbooks and trade books for elementary and junior high students. In retirement her last project was a written description of the Asbury Towers community where she lived.
Mrs. Boyd was a lifetime contributor to colleges and scholarship funds, strongly believing that America’s greatest gift to its citizens was its public education system. She was declared a Sagamore of the Wabash and also was installed in the Putnam County Hall of Fame for stalwart service to her community.
