Dr. Nila B. Smith, Alpha Chapter, was a state founder and the first state president. She had joined Delta Kappa Gamma while serving as the dean of education at Whittier College, CA.
After relocating at Indiana University-Bloomington, she contacted Dr. Annie Webb Blanton about organizing chapters in Indiana.  Alpha Chapter was organized three days before the state organization; Beta Chapter along with the state founders and state charter members, were initiated on January 29, 1938.
Dr. Smith then divided the state into 17 districts and charged each Founder with establishing a chapter in her district. Dr. Smith is credited with organizing Alpha and Beta chapters.
Due to accepting the position of professor of education at the University of Southern California, Nila B. Smith resigned as state president of the Indiana organization after one year.
Dr. Smith chaired the National Program Committee 1938-1939 and served on the National Achievement Award committee 1939-1940.
