Dr. Merle Spacey Brown, Alpha Chapter, was the fourth state president of the Indiana organization. At that time she was an assistant professor of elementary education at the State Teachers College, Terre Haute.
In 1945 the Office of Defense Transportation ruled that a state convention could not be held, probably due to the rationing of gasoline. In its place a state executive board meeting was held and plans were made for a state publication not to exceed four issues per year. Regional meetings around the state also were proposed to replace the banned 1945 state convention. The following year the annual convention was resumed.
Dr. Brown began her career as an educator at the age of 17, having obtained her teaching credential from Hanover College…” She furthered her own education while in the classroom by attending Indiana University, Indiana State Teachers College, and finally San Jose State University (CA). Always profoundly interested in providing an enriched curriculum for able children, she established the San Jose (CA) Unified School District’s gifted program in 1962 and was its supervisor until her retirement. “To her, education in all forms was the most important thing that you could receive.”
